Chuck was born on September 15, 1939 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Williamina “Ina” (Caw) and Charles Cope Carson. He immigrated along with his sister and parents to Toronto, Canada in 1953 and then to Chicago, Illinois in 1954.
Chuck graduated from Kelly High School in 1957, then joined the United States Navy in 1958. Chuck served in Rota, Spain, Glynco, Georgia, and finally at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, Virgina. While there he enjoyed road rallies and gymkhanas driving the Austin Healey he brought back from Spain. He was honorably discharged in 1964.
While stationed at Oceana, Chuck met his soon to be wife Gwylan (Lynne) Ilgenfritz. They married on January 28, 1967 in York, Pennsylvania. Chuck and Lynne settled in Virginia Beach where they lived for thirty-three years. During this time Chuck worked in the electronics field installation, repair and maintenance of electronic equipment on naval and civilian ships and facilities with EMCO and Creasy Electronics.
In 2000, Chuck and Lynne moved to Nellysford, Virginia where they started a vineyard. While there, Chuck and Lynne were active as master gardeners and members of Rockfish Presbyterian Church. When farming became too difficult, they took the opportunity to travel the world including New Zealand, Australia, Peru, Scandinavia, the Baltic countries and a riverboat cruise through the heart of Europe.
In 2022, Chuck and Lynne moved to Chicago, Illinois, to be close to their daughter and her family. Chuck became a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church and enjoyed watching his granddaughters grow up.
Chuck enjoyed the sea and sailing, fishing, reading, gardening, story-telling and playing with his English setters.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lynne Carson, his daughter and son-in-law Caryn and Jonathan Borg-Breen, his three granddaughters Samantha, Kathryn and Hayley, his cousins Steve Thomson and Rob Thomson, and his nieces Elaine Rakauskas and Deanne Fehr.
Preceding Chuck in death are his parents Ina and Charles Carson and his sister Catherine (Rena) Rakauskas.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm December 5, 2025, at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago.
