With heavy hearts yet deep gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Barbara Mayer on May 23, 2026. Barbara departed this world peacefully, surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of her home. Born in Chicago on December 2, 1935, she was the beloved daughter of the late Michael Fritzen and Hedwig (Ludwig) Kammermeier.
Barbara was a beacon of love and devotion, a reflection of the enduring partnership she shared with her beloved husband, Alfred. Their marriage of 62 years was a testament to unconditional love and mutual respect, setting an inspiring example for their family. Although she is now reunited with Alfred in eternal rest, she leaves behind a legacy of family and faith with her cherished children: Rosemarie (John), Michael (Shelly), Elizabeth (Hans), and Thomas (MaryBeth). Her legacy further extends to her nine grandchildren: Amber (Jesse), Katelyn (Matthew), Adam (Georgie), Ian (Allyson), Erin, Matthew, Megan, Madison, and Sydney in addition to her three great-grandchildren: Parker, Brynlee, and Quinn, who will carry forward her memory and values.
A lifelong learner, Barbara pursued her passion for education by earning a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University, followed by a master’s degree. Her career as a German teacher at St. Viator High School was not just a profession but a calling. Barbara's unique teaching style—which included cultural immersion through music, dance, and culinary arts—left a lasting impact on her students. Her dedication was recognized nationally, too, as she was named National German Teacher of the Year, an accolade that took her to Washington, D.C. and filled her family with pride.
Barbara was a woman of unwavering faith and an active member of the Catholic community. Her involvement with the Catholic Kolping Society of Chicago and St. James Church was profound. Alongside Alfred, she helped organize vibrant Oktoberfest celebrations and reinitiated cherished funeral luncheons. She was a founding member of one of the longest-running Faith Sharing Groups at St. James, a testament to her commitment to nurturing spiritual connections. Her hand-knit prayer shawls, infused with love and prayers, brought comfort and warmth to many.
A woman of many talents, Barbara's creativity knew no bounds. Her sewing skills were legendary, crafting matching outfits for her daughters and treasured doll clothes for her granddaughters. With quilting, knitting, and crocheting, she found artistic expressions that brought her joy and left a tangible legacy for her family. Her kitchen was a sanctuary of delicious smells, where her baking prowess was both a gift and a calling card. The family piano gatherings, especially on Christmas Eve, echo with the memories of her playing and singing, a cherished tradition that will continue in her honor.
Barbara's presence was marked by a quiet smile and dancing eyes, traits that endeared her to all who knew her. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love made her a cornerstone of her family and community. She embodied the essence of family and faith, leaving a profound impact on those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Barbara Mayer’s life was a beautiful tapestry of love, service, and grace, and her spirit will forever inspire those who were blessed to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
A memorial in the Narthex will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with a service to celebrate Barbara's life in the church following from 10 a.m-11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 831 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, IL 60004.
As we gather to honor her memory, we remember a remarkable woman whose life was an embodiment of love, faith, and devotion.
