Major Richard (Dick) Elwin Squires (USMC Ret), 83, passed on 21 August 2023. He passing was preceded by his wife, Patricia (Pat) B Squires, 80, who passed away peacefully on 7 April 2023. Patricia and Richard had been married 58 years.
Dick and Pat are survived by their children Candace Squires, Kathleen (Squires) Maguire, and David R Squires. Dick is survived by his brothers, Bruce Squires and Dale Squires. Dick and Pat have eight granddaughters, one grandson, one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter.
Dick was born on 26 July 1940, in Long Beach, California. Dick and Pat both graduated from Utah State University in 1964 and married that same year. Dick went on to earn two master’s degrees.
Dick and Pat set off to explore the world for almost 20 years when Dick was commissioned as US Marine Corps officer in February 1966. They moved 18 times while Dick was in the Marines. Dick had a decorated career as a Marine officer. He was wounded in the battle of Hue city, Vietnam during the Tet Offensive in February 1968 and received two purple Hearts and the Bronze Star with Valor.
After retiring from the military in 1983, Pat and Dick packed up the family and moved to Reno, Nevada, where they had lived ever since. In 2000, Dick retired from his second career at the Washoe County School District where he worked as the Supervisor of Operations for all plants and facilities.
Dick and Pat’s house had a revolving door and was always open to any person or wayward animal. They were incredibly generous and giving foster parents to over 200 children over three decades, in Oregon, California, and Nevada. Over the course of Richard’s life, he was a newspaper delivery boy, cadet, librarian, court reporter, forest firefighter, engineer, Marine officer, school administrator, teacher, and beekeeper.
