Matthew Grant Huntley

Matt’s family moved from Colorado to Nevada in 1964. He was a graduate of Wooster High School, UNR, and McGeorge Law School. After McGeorge, Matt and his brother, Rex, practiced law in the same Reno offices for over 30 years. They were also heavily involved in the mining development business, a passion they inherited from their dad.

He adored his family more than anything. He married Michon in 1992 and together they raised two beautiful daughters. Nothing gave him more happiness than watching them grow up and succeed in life. He also cherished the time he had with his grandchildren and was looking forward to the birth of a new grandson this year.

Matt also loved the desert. He was a true son of Northern Nevada and its rural areas, exploring successfully with his brothers for mineral riches from Taylor Canyon to Tonopah, from Empire to Elko, from Midas to Montezuma. He also loved a good time, and fishing Pyramid with family and friends remained a favorite pastime throughout his adult life.

He is survived by Michon, his lovely wife of 33 years who stood by him through thick and thin; his two daughters, Madison and Stephanie; his stepchildren, Blaire Smulyan and Brandon Smulyan (Melissa); along with grandchildren Clara, Lyla, and Everly, who lit up his life every time he saw them. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. Matt’s surviving siblings include: Stephanie Rudolph MD, Rex Huntley (Robin), Mark Huntley (Laura), and Sabrina Larson (Shawn).

Matt was preceded in death by parents Grant and Patty Huntley, and by his sister, Lizann Huntley.

Matt was a wonderful guy who was loved by many. He had a kind spirit and a sharp sense of humor that made him hundreds of friends over his lifetime, including his best friends Andy Peterman and his cousin Kurt Klapwyk, who greatly mourn his loss.

Very special thanks go to Donna Martin, who was such a steadfast and generous friend to both Matt and Michon.

Indeed, those who knew Matt will be all be the poorer for his passing.

A Celebration of Life for Matt will be held at a later date.
