After graduating from high school, Fred attended Dickinson State College. Two years later, he joined the U.S. Army, spending most of his service stationed in Germany.
Following his honorable discharge, Fred continued his education at Montana State University Billings earning a Bachelor’s degree in Education. During his college years, he met Karen Lee, and they married in June of the following year — beginning a partnership that would last a lifetime.
Fred’s early career included teaching at a business college, but his passion for learning led him back to school. He earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Minnesota, followed by an MBA from Minnesota State University, Mankato, supported by the GI Bill.
Fred built a distinguished career in Human Resources, working for companies such as Control Data, Burlington Northern, B. Dalton Bookseller, Target Corporation, and eventually serving as Senior Vice President of Hub Distributing. Of all his professional roles, he especially cherished his time at B. Dalton, combining his love of books with his work — Fred was a lifelong, avid reader.
Outside of work, Fred found joy in the outdoors. He loved hunting trips to Montana and fishing adventures — especially ice fishing in northern Minnesota with his close friends. Above all, Fred treasured time with his family. He was an enthusiastic supporter at their sporting events, piano recitals, and every milestone, big or small. His quick wit, playful teasing, and genuine warmth left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
Fred was also a mentor to many, generously offering advice on resumes, interviews, and life’s big decisions. And Fred thoroughly enjoyed giving back to his church, Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Reno, Nevada.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Karen (Lee) Ford; daughter, Jolene (Tom) Callihan; son, Michael (Rachel) Ford; grandson, Zac Callihan; granddaughters, Morgan (Cullen) Bryant, Sydney, Maya, and Gabby Ford; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Diane Ford, and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Lavina Ford; and his sister, Mary Sue Volk.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on what would have been his 85th birthday — July 10, 2025 — at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Reno, Nevada.
Fred’s life was one of kindness, humor, hard work, and deep devotion to family and friends. He will be missed beyond words and remembered with great love.
