It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eric Jock Ochiltree on May 20th, 2024. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was born on September 21,1947 in Rahway, NJ. His family traveled between NJ and FL often for work, but finally settled in North Miami Beach, FL for many years. Jock is survived by his wife Leah of 56 years, Son Scott, Grandchildren Jake, Tyler and Mia of Reno, NV, Sister Daune Hanzelik, nephew Sean and family, nephew Ryan and family, all of Chattanooga TN. He is predeceased by his parents Edmund and Dorothy Ochiltree, grandparents and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Jock graduated from Miami Norland High School in Miami FL. He graduated Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1970. His first engineering job was with Motorola in Phoenix, Arizona where he earned a Master’s in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University. From there the family moved to San Jose, CA where he earned his Master’s of Business Administration at Santa Clara University. Jock’s career of 35+ years in the Semiconductor Industry started as an engineer, several management positions and rose to CEO. He and Leah traveled the world for work and pleasure throughout his career. His career became something he truly loved and excelled in. He was respected by his co-workers and loved by those who knew him. He retired in 2005 and he and Leah settled at World Golf Village in St. Augustine, FL. He and Scott owned and ran two restaurants together while there and Jock also began an interest in Real Estate and gathered a large clientele. He carried this interest with him when they decided to follow their son back west to Reno, Nevada. He continued Real Estate in Reno until his passing.
Jock was a man of great intelligence and always had a drive to excel. His mathematical mind had him always creating spreadsheets and ledgers of things that he found important. He started zoom meetings every month with his many cousins and kept a spreadsheet of every month of who attended. He enjoyed those meetings so much and continued them until the last month when he just was not able. He had some for golf courses he played. One showed 417 courses. He carried a book that he was keeping track of his doctors’ appointments and what was said, ideas, financials, real estate and so many other things. He wrote so tiny and neatly to get more words on every page. He and his mother were so alike in their record keeping and a need to keep track of everything.
Jock’s career was important to him, but his family, son and grandchildren were the real joys of his life. He would light up whenever his grandchildren were with him or on the phone. They were his reason for battling cancer and wanting to live. He also loved golf, snow skiing and reading. He was saddened when skiing became too difficult for him, but continued to try and play golf whenever he could. He especially enjoyed playing golf with his son Scott. He read whenever life allowed.
While in St Augustine, Jock and Leah became members of The Village Church where they restored their faith, which became very important to them. In Reno they became members of Covenant Presbyterian Church and were very involved in the church. He became a Deacon and the Treasurer until very recently. His faith and love of Jesus became a driving force in his life. Jock lived a full and exciting life and often said during his battle with cancer that he wanted to live but was also ready because “I know where I am going”. We need to celebrate his life and his new beginning rather than mourning our loss every day. He would want us to rejoice for him in knowing that he is finally home.
Memorial Service will be held on June 29, 2024 at Covenant Presbyterian Church 6695 Mae Anne Ave Reno, NV at 11:00 am.
