Born on November 8, 1932, in Formia, Italy, Rosalba was just ten years old when World War II reached her hometown on September 9, 1943. For the next eight months, she experienced the war and its horrors along the Winter and Gustav Lines, taking refuge with her family in the inland hills and caves until Formia was liberated by American troops on May 18, 1944. She saw and endured things no child should ever have to, and those experiences became foundational to the strength, resilience, compassion, and deep appreciation for life that shaped the woman she became.
Rosalba immigrated to the United Stated on December 18th, 1958. She worked for decades as a foreign language teacher at Clarkstown North High School in Rockland County NY where, almost every year, she organized trips to Italy that became legendary tales of learning thru living for her students. Many of those students remained in contact with her, often having her at their weddings, children’s communions, and other important life events.
Rosalba is survived by her sister “Pupa,” brother Alessio, sons Max, Marco, and Freddie, daughter-in-law Lynn, and her only grandson, Luca. She is also survived by scores of families and friends who were drawn to her through one of her most kind gifts - her vast culinary generosity. Time in the kitchen with her grandson was one of her cherished pastimes where she shared much more than the simple act of cooking and passed down more than recipes. She shared the flavors of her childhood, the traditions of her family, stories of Italy, and the love that had always surrounded her table, allowing her to pass a part of herself, and of the family she came from, on to the next generation.
Later, retiring to Naples Florida, Rosalba met her beloved Irvin Pierce who predeceased her. Irvin gave her great joy and an opportunity at yet another family including the “Granddaughter I never had, Ava.”
Rosalba asked that her ashes be divided between Naples FL with Irving’s ashes, and Formia, Italy. A celebration of life will be held at both locations at a later date.
Rosalba, our rose of the dawn, you touched so many lives. We miss you dearly.
