

Richard was born December 8,1971 in Washington, DC and grew up in the neighborhood of Hillcrest located in SE, Washington. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1989. Richard completed studies in European Culture and History at the Universiteit van Amsterdam in 1993 and graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in History in 1995. He attained his M.A. in Educational Communication and Technology from New York University in 2001.
Richard began his teaching career in 1999 with Alexandria, VA City Public Schools. Richard taught English as a Second Language for several years both at home and abroad, including spells in Thailand, China, Hungary, and Italy. He completed his professional career in San Francisco, CA, with United States Land Property Management as an Assistant Property Manager. Richard was, and his family is, particularly thankful to everyone at Team USLPM and the Kwok family for their support and gracious understanding.
His passion for travel and meeting new friends served as a catalyst throughout his life. An ardent sports fan, Richard especially enjoyed soccer and tennis and went on to play club soccer in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in the early 1990's.
Having received a diagnosis of schizophrenia at the age of forty years from The National Institute of Health, Richard expressed his gratitude for their expertise, treatment, and kindness over the years, especially in learning to live and thrive with mental illness, and later on with brain cancer.
He is survived by his loving parents, brothers, and nephews and nieces.
