After a period of declining health, Reginald Garland (“Reggie”) Fuller died peacefully on Saturday, February 22nd, and joyfully reunited with his best friend, Carleen Ruth (nee Morgan), whom he had deeply missed since her death in February 2021.
Reginald was born March 18, 1927 in Berryville, VA, eldest child of Eben Garland (“Tuck”) and Irma Jane Costello Fuller. In addition to his parents and cherished wife, Reggie was preceded in death by brothers Richard Eben, Raymond Foster, and Ronald Iden Fuller.
Upon graduating from Berryville High School, Reggie enlisted in the US Navy, serving in the South Pacific and the Philippines during WWII. After the war, he moved to Washington, DC, attending college on the GI Bill where he earned degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, and Finance, while also beginning what would prove an interesting and rewarding forty-five year career with (what was then called) The Washington Gas Light Company, working his way up the corporate ladder from Accounting Department “floater” to later retiring as Senior VP and CFO.
It was at WGL that this outgoing Southern Gentleman met the love of his life, Carleen, a reserved New Englander from Portland, Maine. It was a perfect fit! They married in 1952 and raised a growing family in Springfield, VA where he stayed active in community, civic, and service organizations including the Jaycees, Civitan, Boy Scouts, and Little League. Methodical and always with an eye for every detail, Reggie could organize or coordinate any project, as well as design, construct, refurbish, replumb, rewire, or repair just about anything; skills he (thankfully!) passed on to his children, to varying degrees.
The Fullers called Springfield home until retiring to the Sugar Mill community of New Smyrna Beach, FL in 1991. There Reggie enjoyed playing golf and tennis, hosting poker nights with his buddies, as well as attending social events and Bingo nights at The Club with Carleen. In true snowbird style, they migrated north each year to spend summers on Sebago Lake, in Maine, at a family cottage built by Carleen’s father and where neighboring cottages all belong to other members of her Morgan clan.
Reggie loved and valued his family above all. He is survived by daughters Caryl G. Fuller and Janet R. Fuller, both of Raleigh, NC; son Dale E. Fuller, of Fairfax, VA and Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren Morgan R. O’Bryhim, of Franklinton, NC and Alexander K. O’Bryhim, of Raleigh, NC; sister Rosalind J. Longerbeam, of Berryville, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather in Berryville, VA in early June for Reggie’s interment in the Fuller plot in Green Hill Cemetery and to celebrate this life well lived.
The family would like to express deepest appreciation for the nurses, aides and all the Hillcrest Raleigh staff who blessed our lives as members of “Team Reggie” for their kindness, caring, and support during the ups and downs of these past several months.
