Rebekah was born on November 24, 1962 in Louisburg, NC, graduating from Louisburg High School in 1981. She found her love of the French language while attending East Carolina University, graduating in 1985, where soon after she served as an au pair in France. She became a teacher at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City, NC, and later taught at Riverside High School in Durham, NC. She left teaching to care for her young family after her children were born.
Rebekah was a loving and devoted mother and wife. She deeply cherished her family, as they did her too. She knew no strangers and had a gift for connecting with others. Rebekah demonstrated to her husband and two children what it was to be loved unconditionally.
Rebekah considered reading among her blessings which kept her informed and extended her world, transporting her to other times and places. She counted her art and writing as a blessing, which gave her an awareness of the beauty of the world around her. Through writing, she created her own world on paper, loving the process of creating as much as the final piece.
Rebekah was preceded in death by her father and mother, George Blackwell Murphy and Jane Virginia Murphy (nee Allen) respectively. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Richard Edward Mullinax (Smithfield, NC); daughter, Dorothy Blackwell Mullinax and partner, Tyler Klotz (Knightdale, NC); and son, Christopher Chapman Mullinax and wife, Katherine (Hyattsville, MD).
The family would like to thank the staff at the Neurosurgical ICU, UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC for the care and comfort Rebekah received as well as the support they gave to the family. They exemplified the meaning of professionalism while being angels of compassion.
A celebration of life ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, 3313 Wade Avenue, Raleigh, NC. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider a donation to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation in Rebekah’s honor (bafound.org).
