Myles "Mike" Michael Gittin

Mike was born on September 9, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Alvin and Norma Gittin. He built a remarkable career spanning more than 50 years in the computer industry, eventually owning and operating his own computer sales business. He was respected not only for his knowledge and work ethic, but also for the integrity with which he conducted business throughout his career.

Outside of work, Mike had a passion for Datsun Z sports cars and was an active member of the local Z Club for several years. He also had a lifelong love of music. As a young man, he played the Hammond B-3 organ in a band that performed in and around the DC area including his father’s restaurant, Twining Court Stables. His love of music never faded, and he continued playing the piano until his final days. He was known for his dry wit, his love of Jeopardy! and all things trivia, and his remarkable ability to remember facts about almost anything. If you ever needed the answer to a trivia question, help solving a computer problem, or someone to make you smile with a perfectly timed dry remark, Mike was the person to call. He was also rarely seen without his beloved Shetland Sheepdog, Maximus Dogamus (Max), who went everywhere with him. Those who knew him appreciated his quiet intelligence, quick humor, and generous heart.

Above all else, Mike treasured his family. His greatest joy was the life he shared with his beloved wife and best friend, Sharon Shipp Gittin. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. He was a caring husband, a proud father and grandfather, and was especially delighted to become a great-grandfather.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Shipp Gittin; his daughter, Jennifer Phelps and husband, Jason Phelps; his grandchildren, Colin Phelps and Gracyn Phelps; his great-grandson, Stetson Riggs; his brother, Lawrence “Larry” Gittin and wife, Diane; his half sister Stephanie Uptegraft, and several beloved nephews and a nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard “Dick” Gittin; his sister, Allison Simonis; and his half-brother, Jay Gittin.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at his home in Durham on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in Mike’s memory.
