MaryEllen Thornton

Born on March 5, 1942 in Byron Center, Kent County, Michigan, she was the cherished child of Rhoda and Allen Carter. After graduating from Lansing Sexton High School, she spent three years as a student before meeting Lawrence Jay Hansen, with whom she had four lovely children. She later married Richard Thornton bringing him joy and happiness until his death in 1996.

She was known for her smiling and happy demeanor bringing joy to all who knew and loved her. She loved gardening and painting and was a talented accordionist in her high school band. She spent her later years supporting the Salvation Army and volunteering as an adopted grandma for a local school.

Mary Ellen is survived by her loving children, Heather (Ron) Klein, Kurt (Sue) Hansen, Adrienne (Stephen) Fraleigh and Elizabeth (Darin) Busick, and grandchildren: Michelle, Bree, Tommy, Coy, Lauren B., Lauren S., Jake H., Travis, Matthew, Savannah, Claire, Madison and Jake M.

A memorial service will be held in the Detroit area. Service details will be announced when finalized.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Salvation Army.
