Born on Long Island, New York, she had her pre-school years there before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina due to her father's work. Subsequent moves to Atlanta, Georgia and Rocky Mount, North Carolina over her formative years, graduating from RMSH in 1981.
Mary loved scouting, having started as a Brownie and evolved through Cadets. She earned the Gold Award which was the highest award obtainable at the time. She loved animals which led to she and her husband volunteering with Rocky Mount Animal Rescue organizations until illness prevented her further involvement.
An avid reader, Mary naturally had to work at Braswell Memorial Library in Rocky Mount, where she remained for over 30 years. She worked for years in the Children's Room and was known as "The red headed lady in the library." Later, she transferred to the general section and remained there until her early retirement due to her illness in 2014.
She leaves behind her husband of 18 years, Jeff; parents, Lucille and Jim Monahan; sisters, Eileen, Katherine (Galen), and Ellen; brother, Michael; 4 nieces; 2 nephews; a great niece; and a great nephew.
