Larry Devon Giles

Larry Devon Giles, age 78, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Duke University Hospital in Durham. He was born February 8, 1947, in Fayetteville, NC, to the late Bert Giles, Sr. and Betty Letha Bagley. He grew up in Raleigh, NC.

Larry graduated from Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh in 1965 and enrolled in the accounting program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member of the business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, and was actively involved in sports including football and track and field. He set many State records in track as a champion sprinter and received the outstanding track trophy in 1965 as one of Broughton’s top athletes. At UNC he received an ACC Champions medal for the 1966 Freshman Division 1 Mile Relay.

Larry began his career selling family bibles and other books, including encyclopedias, door to door and recruiting others to do the same. He later sold deluxe stainless-steel cookware while doing cooking demonstrations in homes. Since 2000, he has been an Independent Associate and Director with LegalShield, which specializes in prepaid legal services and identity theft solutions.

Since 1986, Larry has worked as an Enrolled Agent specializing in tax return preparation and taxpayer representation before the IRS. He was Charter Past President and Honorary Life President of the North Carolina Society of Enrolled Agents. He was Past Board Chairman of the Graduate Fellows Association of the National Tax Practice Institute. As a volunteer, he did charitable work for Champions for Kids and Santa Year-Round.

Larry loved meeting and socializing with people. He was funny and entertaining. He enjoyed biking on the American Tobacco Trail, playing golf, and sharing his many interesting stories and experiences with clients and friends. He was a wonderful loving husband and brother. He taught Sunday School for many years and served as Church Moderator and Deacon Chair. He served on the Board of Directors for the Triangle Greenways Council.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service at Beacon Baptist Church, 2110 Trawick Road, Raleigh, NC 27604 on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 2:30 pm. Visitation with the family will be in the lobby following the service.

Larry is survived by wife, Linda Latta Giles, of 54 years; two brothers, Bert Giles, Jr. and Michael Glenn Giles; and a half-brother, Patrick R. Quick. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Earl Giles, also known as Rabbit.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beacon Baptist Church Building Fund.
