John graduated from Lincolnton High School then studied at High Point College where he graduated with a BS of Arts in Sociology in 1969. He continued his education at Duke University and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Divinity in 1973.
He served as minister in the United Methodist Church for many years before transitioning to a career in industrial sales. As a young adult, John loved the outdoors and taking youth groups on hikes and camping trips. His love of golf took over during middle age, and he was a member of Lenoir Golf Course for many years. He was a master of NC-style BBQ, and his cooking style and sauce recipe live on through his grandchildren. Watching Duke basketball and hosting watch parties was clearly one of his favorite things to do.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Geraldyne Newton Lockman; parents, Shelton Alburtus Lockman and Ruth Forbis Lockman; and brother Robert (Bobby) Lockman.
He is survived by his daughters, Maria Lockman Greer, Jennifer Lockman Robinson and husband, Jon Paul Robinson, and Jonjie Lockman and husband, Steve Callis; grandchildren, Carrie Greer Henderson and husband, Brent Henderson, Sydney Greer Everett and husband, Simon Everett, Bergsvein Toverud and wife, Naomi Toverud, Shelton Toverud and wife, Alyssa Mullis, Quinn Sosne and husband, Adam Sosne, Ashley Robinson McIntyre and husband, Chance McIntyre, Duncan Robinson and wife, Kendra Robinson, and Emma Robinson Curtsinger and husband, Japheth Curtsinger; and brothers, Barry Lockman, Philip Lockman, Michael Lockman, and Joey Lockman.
