My heart and my soulmate who inspired, supported and encouraged me to be the best I could be during our 52 years together.
You entered this earthly life October 17, 1945, in Manhattan, NY. Then when you were 12 you and your brother Richard moved to Kings Mountain, NC with mother “Dot.” She loved her boys fiercely; becoming a widow too early in life. She being a teacher inspired in both you and Richard the love for learning. This showed through in your and Richard’s academic excellence in school. Additionally, you were both avid and successful tennis players and loved sports of all kinds.
Upon graduation from Wake Forest University in 1966 you taught physics a year before entering dental school at UNC Chapel Hill. Your private dental practice served many patients for 38 years in Raleigh, NC.
When we met in Morganton, NC you were completing a residency there and I was graduating nursing school. We met December 14, 1973, and married December 14, 1974. Our family life with our daughter Erin and son Hunter taught us the real meaning and purpose of living! We experienced love, learning, growing and becoming better parents and thus persons as Erin and Hunter taught us unconditional love. Our 52 years together brought us happiness, adventures, challenges, successes and tragedy: the tragic loss of our Hunter in 2021 redefined our life as we knew it but strengthened and deepened our bond of family and friends.
Erin and I did not ever leave your side as you were at Duke Raleigh and Transitions Lifecare those last four days. Your brother Richard arrived from Texas and many friends and Christy surrounded you on your final earthly day.
Erin has lost her dad; you were her heart. Jacob and Thomas have lost their Da (granddad) and Richard lost his brother. Many friends, staff and patients loved, respected and remember you as such a kind, gentle and caring man. Your four legged companion and best friend Christy is grieving with all of us too.
Love never dies so we shall move forward with your loving gentle spirit guiding us! Now, rest in peace Donn as I promised I would not allow you to suffer in a diseased physical body!
I always told you that YOU WERE THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS!
Now as I write this, heartbroken and sobbing, I listen to Wind Beneath My Wings and promise to keep giving back and being the best I can be for you and our family and friends. You taught me so much and gave my life meaning.
As I whispered quietly in your ear when you were departing; I love you and I will see you on the other side. God will carry us all forward in our love and loss!
Love,
Judy
Private family services for Donn will be at the NC beach and mountains at a later date.
