family on March 4th, 2019. He was the devoted husband of K. Ann Dwyer with whom he shared
60 wonderful years of marriage. He is preceded in death by his older brother John (Jack) Dwyer
(deceased), and sisters Joan Fetzer (deceased), and survived by Diane (Toogie) Handlos.
Born in Grand Junction Colorado on September 11, 1930, he was the son of the late John W.
and Mary E. (Gallagher) Dwyer. He served his country as a medic in the US Navy, graduated
from Regis College in 1958, and entered medical school, graduating from the University of
Colorado in 1962. He trained as an anesthesiologist at St. Joseph’s Hospital then joined the
staff at Community General Hospital in Syracuse, NY, the final 9 years of his career was at A.L.
Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton, NY. He retired in 1998.
Doc enjoyed an active life at his beloved “camp” on Lake Ontario, with endless memories
including his charades while water skiing, flying around on the Air Cycle and boating (while
pulling the kids behind). There were many evenings of star gazing and toasting marshmallows
while reciting poems - “Face on the Barroom Floor”, “Dangerous Dan McGrew”, and “The
Piddling Pup” were among his favorites. He was an avid reader and had a passion for his
antique cars. Many a day would be happily spent working on his Model T’s getting ready for that
ride for ice cream. At his home in Syracuse, he was the dad who took the kids on the trailer
around the neighborhood while trick-or-treating, froze while making a skating rink in the
backyard, and taught his kids how to snow ski. Always fixing something, home is where he
wanted to be. He wisely shared Manhattan’s and quiet conversation with his lovely wife every
evening before dinner and always tried to make each of his children feel special as they
recounted their day. Docs quick wit and funny jokes entertained all of those he knew over the
years. Genuine and with a smile, always ready to lend a hand or his tools, he was loved by all
who knew him. Family and friends will miss his enlightened words of advice, great sense of
humor and his warmth.
He leaves his wife, four daughters and their husbands and two sons and their wives, along with
fourteen grandchildren who carry forward his love of life. Father to: Kathryn (Dwyer) /Peter
Fitzgerald, Portola Valley CA, Joanie (Dwyer)/Gregory Scott, Birmingham, AL., Mary
(Dwyer)/Paul DeLorenzo, Wenham, MA.; Nancy (Dwyer)/Thomas Cerniglio, Louisville, KY.;
William J. /Renee Dwyer, Skaneateles, NY; and Michael W./Connie Weiss-Dwyer, Seattle, WA.
Grandfather to Michael & Shannon Fitzgerald, Matthew & Ryan Scott, Audrey, Jack, Julia &
Nathan DeLorenzo, Jared, Anya & Raina Cerniglia, Meghan & Liz Dwyer, and Lyric Weiss.
He was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, doctor, humorist, poet and sage.
