After attending Salisbury-Elk Lick High School, she graduated from Hood College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Political Science. Following college, she received a Bachelor of Science/Registered Nurse degree from Columbia University in New York City.
Sonya worked as a NYC public health nurse before moving with her husband to California, where she earned a Master of Nursing in Medical-Surgical Clinical Specialization and Education from UCLA.
Her long career included managing various hospital-based nursing education departments, providing out-sourced education to hospitals, and instructing students enrolled in university nursing programs.
After retiring to Florida, Sonya became an active volunteer for social and community-based programs. She will be remembered as a welcoming, caring person who, throughout her life, spoke up for social justice.
Sonya was preceded in death by her husband, M. Lloyd Baum. Survivors include her brother Dr. David Solosko (Sandra Kniess), her sister Deborah Harmon, many nieces and nephews, and her beloved cat, Aria.
Private funeral arrangements are under care of the Neptune Society, with interment at sea. Donations may be made in her memory to Palm Beach County Food Bank or a charity of the donor’s choice.
