Scott F.N. Wing of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away on July 3, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. Scott was born on August 7, 1948, to Nance and Leslie Neill in Upper Montclair, N.J. After Leslie died of polio, Scott was adopted by Hewlett P. Wing in 1951.
He attended Trinity-Pawling School, graduated from DePauw University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1971, and received his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Florida Atlantic University. While at DePauw University, Scott spent a summer with Operation Crossroads Africa, building a school in Liberia. He began his lengthy career in the educational field as a sociology teacher and later an administrator at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Conn., where he worked for 15 years. During this time he married Joan Withington, his wife of 52 years, with whom he shared two daughters, Jessica (McKinney) and Sarah (Svendsen). In 1986, he moved to Boca Raton, Fla., where he became head of the middle school at Pine Crest Boca. He remained an administrator in various capacities until his retirement in 2014. During COVID, he joined the Vestry at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church and became a lead usher. Scott had many hobbies over the years. He was a philatelist, collector of books and model trains, and loved to garden, but most of all he enjoyed mentoring his faculty and educating students. He loved swimming, a good soak in the hot tub, Hallmark movies, the arts, and his pets. He was a devoted and loving father who loved community and making people laugh.
Besides his wife and daughters, he leaves four granddaughters, Emma and Caroline Svendsen and Kathleen and Diana McKinney; sons-in-law Jared Svendsen and Douglas McKinney; and his brother Thomas (Andrea) Wing and family. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. Contributions in his memory should be made to your favorite educational institution or charity, or place of worship.
A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church in Boca Raton. For those unable to attend in person, the service will also be livestreamed on St. Gregory’s website and Facebook page.
