Roger was born on October 28, 1929 in Wilkinsburg, PA to William Conrad and Velma (nee Jahnke.) Roger graduated from Wilkinsburg High School. He served in the Korean War as a Corporal in the US Army Artillery from July, 1952 until August, 1953. He earned a Korean service medal with two bronze stars.
Upon his honorary discharge from the US Army, Roger returned to the US where he married Dorothy (nee Moore) on August 22,1953. Roger earned an Associate Degree from Penn State University in 1955.
He and Dorothy lived in Wilson, PA, Clairton, PA, Youngstown, OH and eventually moved to Oreland PA in 1958 where they raised their three sons, Roger L. (Oreland, PA), Steven K. (Malvern, PA) and Craig L. (Panama). Roger was self-employed as a Sales Estimator, for Steel Fabricators in the construction industry.
Roger’s love of sailing became his avocation from the early days when he and the family would travel to Ocean City, NJ and sail off the coast. Starting with a Sunfish and then a Sailfish boat he eventually purchased a Pearson Tritan 29 ft. sailboat christened “Wunderjahr.” It was his great pleasure to feel the salt and sea breeze as he sailed various coastal waterways along the East Coast.
Roger was an active member of the Pennsway Power Squadron in the 1970s which provided instruction in various aspects of boating including navigation and boating safety.
Roger and Dorothy moved to Deerfield Beach, Florida in 1983 after he worked on various construction projects in the state including EPCOT, in Disneyworld. Roger enjoyed taking family members motoring on the Intercoastal waterway as well as on the seas along the Florida coast for many years. Roger and Dorothy were often visited by family and friends and loved sharing their southern home with all. Roger served as a deacon and an elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Pompano Beach, FL.
Roger and Dorothy moved to St. Andrews Estates in Boca Raton, FL in 2008.
Roger is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Dorothy, sons Roger (Debbie), Steven (Diane) and Craig (Connie), grandchildren Candace (Scott Palmberg) Darren (Michelle) Daniel, Matthew (Kerrie) Luke, Alison, and Erica along with his great-grandchildren Cynan Palmberg, Wesley, and Ellie B. He is also survived by his older brother, W. Conrad Jr., (Kill Devil Hills, NC) and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his older sister, Marianne, who died in May, 1971.
A small remembrance of Roger’s big life was held on August 5th at the chapel at St. Andrews Estates South, Boca Raton, FL. A life celebration for extended family and friends will be held in Florida sometime in the fall. A funeral ceremony and inurnment will be private at the South Florida VA National Cemetery in Lake Worth, FL.
