Passed away peacefully at his Florida home Saturday February 23rd with family and friends at his side. Mick was a second generation Native to Florida with modest beginnings growing up in a rough part of Ybor City Tampa. Boxing at an early age provided a constructive outlet for Mick in an impoverished area. Later, Mick served in the Army National Guard for twelve years.
Mick’s career with Florida Power and Light began when he was a teenager and spanned nearly forty years. January of 1970 Mick responded to a call regarding a child that fell deep into an agricultural well. The child’s head was just above the water line. Mick and his FPL crew were assisted by Miami Dade Officer Bill Keen. They were able to drill a parallel hole next to the well, lower themselves inside and tunnel through to rescue the child (two-year-old John Reynolds lll). Mick was recognized by Governor Claude Kirk JR. for his lifesaving efforts.
Following his retirement from FPL Mick invested in real estate and worked for USA Air Mobil a company that maintains power lines from hovering helicopters. Mick’s house was a source of great pride for him. He made many improvements so guests often received a complimentary guided tour when visiting. Mick is survived by Lynn Shatas his greatest love and devoted life partner, son Steve, daughter Linda, sisters Elda Corby and Cookie Rocillo. Rest in peace “Daddy-O”
