“Link” as he was called, was born to Janet and Edmund L. Eveleth in Hartford Connecticut on February 16th, 1937.
He attended The Taft School in Watertown Connecticut and Brown University in Providence RI. Link’s hobbies gravitated towards sailing as a young boy. He was so talented, he started besting his own dad and was considered for Olympic Skipper School but was too young.
During his years at Brown, Link and roommate Mark Donohue (of future Indy 500 and CanAm fame) formed Brown’s first sportscar club. Their racing exploits on campus (after hours) were legendary.
Following his college years, Link moved to Ft Lauderdale and enlisted in the US Army Reserves from 1961 to 1965; he received an honorable discharge as S/SGT.
Link was Dock Master at Americana Marina in the early 70’s. His hobbies included serious sailing: he skippered many sailboats in races from Ft Lauderdale to the Bahamas and back. His true passion, however, revolved around amateur club racing competitions at local and national venues. He belonged to a long list of car clubs including SCCA, PCA, and BMWCCA. He owned over 25 cars in his life, but his heart belonged to Porsche. He became an expert in car preparation for competition. His extensive knowledge was sought by everyone who wanted to improve their competitive edge.
Link had a great sense of humor.
Link’s favorite job was the five-year stint as full-time senior instructor for Brands Hatch of UK when they were located at Hollywood Speedway in the 90’s. Link never missed one day; he instructed over 3000 students during his time there. He road raced until he was 74; his specialty was night racing. Two of Link’s most rewarding endeavors involved the ground level formation of the “Street Survival” school for teens through BMWCCA and the amazing 5 class wins over many years with the Culpepper Miata Racing Team at Moroso’s yearly 24 Hour Enduro : “The Longest Night”.
Link had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed making goofy fun trophies to recognize a great driving performance at an event. “Linky Awards” as they were called, were treasured by anyone lucky enough to receive one.
Link was a spontaneous, outgoing, friendly, talented man with a huge toothy grin and a big heart. He was known to help competitors fix their cars so they could compete against him.
Link is survived by a brother, Peter H. Eveleth and longtime girlfriend and car enthusiast Diane Thoman.
A Celebration of Life will be announced later.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.neptunesociety.com/location/fort-lauderdale-cremation for the Eveleth family.
