Kent “Ken” Lee Howland, born May 23, 1938 in Rochester, New York, passed away at age 80 on May 7, 2019 at Vitas Hospice in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeanette Schroeter Howland in 1951 and Verne Howland in 1994; and his stepmother, Josephine Howland in 2009. Ken is survived by his wife, Annette Vafa; his son Mark (Sheila) Howland; his beloved grandchildren, Zoe, Samuel, and Matthew Howland; daughters, Beth Howland (Cynthia Reynolds) and Lisa (Steve) Johnson; sisters, Linda (Chris) Metzger, Mary Ellen (John) Caporta, and Michele Howland (Bill Banaszewski); stepchildren David Vafa and Shereen Baal (Bob), and their adored daughters, Kyla and Alexa. Ken is also survived by his former wife, Joanne Howland. Ken attended East High School, Michigan State University, and the University of Maryland. He served in the US Army from 1963 to 1965. From 1967 until his retirement in 1997 he taught Social Studies and Biology at West Genesee High School. He was an avid student of international political affairs, an activist with Veterans for Peace and the Syracuse Peace Council, and a worldwide traveler. Ken enjoyed bow hunting, skiing, bicycling, dancing and sunrises over the Atlantic Ocean and over Duck Lake, his summer home. He was a member of the TAO Temple Adath Or - The South Florida Center for Jewish Renewal and Unitarian Universalist Societies in Syracuse and Auburn. A memorial service was held on May 9 in Hollywood, FL. Private services in New York will be held at the convenience of the family.
