Born 1933, in Jamaica, Long Island, he grew up in Bellerose NY, son of George and Dorothy Kirshe.
As a child growing up, he found a lifelong passion for Golf, beginning as a caddie while learning the rules and etiquette of the game. In fact, he once caddied for Babe Ruth, a cigar smoker but big tipper he often recounted. He went onto Long Island’s Chaminade High school and was a standout student and basketball player. Outside of school he enjoyed and competed in pairs roller-skating and winning the US national championship in 1946. He toured across the US, with his pairs partner, his sister Gloria and his parents, as the United States Pairs champions, visiting roller rinks as far as California, travelling the famous Rte. 66!. After Chaminade, he attended and matriculated from Dayton College (University of Dayton), with an ROTC scholarship. He told stories of the many Long island - cross Pennsylvania road trips to Dayton Ohio during his time there. He met Beverly Jean Powell, at a church social (really) and married in 1955.
After Graduating Dayton, he entered the Army as an officer in the Army air corps where he earned his wings and piloted an L-19 Aircraft, a single engine, high wing scouting aircraft, training in Ft. Stewart Georgia, and only crash landed once. After serving his country, he then successfully transitioned back to civilian life in working for the F M Schumacher & Company, selling bulk drapery material throughout New England. Settling first on Donna Road, Holliston, then later in Wayland, Massachusetts, there Hank and Bev raised five boys, Mark, Greg, Michael (Scott), George and Peter. While in Wayland he coached Pop Warner football, Little League and founded and ran the St. Ann’s CYO Basketball program. He was a founding member of Nashawtic Country club in Concord. He and Beverly transitioned into retirement to Boynton Beach Florida’s Quail Ridge and later in Delray Beach.
