It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn Hope (McPherson) Marquis on October 6, 2023 at the age of 72 and the passing of Philip “Jay” Joseph Marquis on October 23, 2023, also at the age of 72. Both Evelyn and Phil (“Jay”) passed away at home under the care of hospice.
Evelyn was born in Presque Isle, Maine on December 26, 1950 and Phil was born in Madawaska, Maine on January 17, 1951. Evelyn and Phil were high school sweethearts, both graduating from Presque Isle High School, and they remained sweethearts until the end. They had celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary in July.
Growing up in Aroostook County, Maine, they had strong work ethics which they continued throughout the years. They worked hard, never spent more than they earned, were always willing to help someone in need, and they were comfortable, enjoying retirement in their beautiful home.
Evelyn was one of four children, raised on a potato farm and she learned to drive a tractor at eight years old. She had a passion for teaching and completed her Master’s Degree at Nova Southeastern University. She taught elementary school for almost four decades in Palm Beach County. Although she never had children of her own, she still touched the lives of countless children and their families here in our community. She loved Phil (our Jay), his blue eyes, NASCAR season, painting and scrapbooking.
Phil was also one of four children, the baby brother, with three older sisters. He loved his wife and took great care of Evelyn, especially during this past year during her battle with brain cancer. He retired from Georgia Pacific and continued his working career in condo maintenance. Phil loved his community and served on the Planning and Zoning Committee for the past few years. He loved to ride his bicycle and it was common to see him riding over 30 miles daily throughout the neighborhood. He made many friends along his bike route and it only served to reinforce his love for the local community. He may be known as Phil to most of you, but he will be remembered as the sweet, blue-eyed “Jay” to family.
Evelyn was survived by her husband of 47 years, Phil “Jay” Marquis and her siblings; Anne Baker and her husband Larry, George McPherson II and his wife Linda, and Ralph McPherson and his wife Paula. She was also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Phil was survived by his three sisters; Phyllis Sanfacon and her husband John, Laura Rusyniak and her husband Paul, and Joan McDonnell and her husband Jim. He was also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank Phil and Ev’s amazing friends and neighbors who have provided so much love, comfort and support during this extremely difficult time. In particular, we would like to thank our cousin Denise McNeill and her daughter Amber; who lovingly looked after both Evelyn and Phil over the past year.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate these two lovely people with us. A celebration of life has been planned for Friday, December 1st from 4-7 PM. The celebration will be held at the Royal Palm Beach Cultural Center, 151 Civic Center Way, Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to any of the following charities; Trustbridge Hospice, American Cancer Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.neptunesociety.com/location/fort-lauderdale-cremation for the Marquis family.
