Estelle H. Cohen, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at the age of nearly 97. She was born on November 13, 1926, in Bayonne, New Jersey, where she grew up as the daughter of Harry and Etta Rubenstein, step-daughter of Anna Rubenstein and sister of Milton and Seymour Rubenstein, together with a large extended family. She lived at various times in: Washington DC; Seneca Falls and Geneva, New York; Williamsport and Montoursville, Pennsylvania; Skokie, Illinois; Cornwall, Ontario; and Boca Raton, Florida.
Estelle was graduated from the Bayonne Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 as a Registered Nurse through the WWII Navy Cadet Corps. She immediately began her practice as a nurse and continued for more than 40 years as a licensed RN in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Illinois.
Estelle worked at numerous hospitals and physician’s offices. She specialized in pediatric and geriatric care, rising to positions as head of departments at several institutions. Estelle also taught practical nursing and personal care attendant students at several vocational schools. An entrepreneur, she owned and ran two small businesses and assisted running a third business during her career. Estelle encouraged many young women, including her daughters, to acquire the education necessary to ensure independent lives..
Estelle was actively involved in Hadassah and Sisterhood. In several local branches, she took on leadership positions, including presidencies and vice-presidencies, membership chair, newsletter editor, and program chair and was an active member of the Nurse’s Council. She also served on the initial board of the homeowner’s association at her community in Boca Raton, including as president.
Estelle was preceded in death by Bernard, her husband of 57 years, her parents, brother Milton and many uncles, aunts and cousins..
She is survived by her children, Lois Cohen, Sandy Cohen, Ellen Cohen and daughter-in law Susan Grossman, grand children Rebecca Grossman-Cohen (Daniel Halioua) and Benjamin Grossman-Cohen (Cosabeth Bullock) and her four beloved great grand children Hazel, Ada, Lila and Judah
