Doreen taught Book-keeping and shorthand at Durham College of Commerce, the business college which she attended in Kingston, Jamaica, then worked as Secretary and Book-keeper in a small Commission Agency for three years. She then worked as Supervisor of Typing Pool in a large Soap Manufacturing Organization (SEPROD) in Kingston, Jamaica for 4 years.
In 1958, she was called by God to serve humanity left behind a very highly paid job and emigrated to Edinburgh Scotland, to study nursing. She received Registered General Nurse certification there in 1961. She moved to London to study Midwifery and became a Certified Midwife. While in Britain she travelled to Denmark, Norway, France, and Germany.
Because her mother was very ill, she returned to Jamaica in 1963. There she worked on Orthopedics at the University College Hospital, Mona, Jamaica for one year, then migrated to Toronto, Canada 1964 where she worked at Toronto General Hospital for two years on Labor & Delivery and Psychiatry. Because of her strong belief in disease prevention Public Health Nursing was always her aim, so she attended University of Toronto to study Public Health Nursing 1964-1965 and received her Diploma. To satisfy the demand of the Provincial Government which gave her a bursary to obtain this diploma, she worked in Chatham, rural Ontario, Canada as a Public Health Nurse for 2 years.
Doreen migrated to White Plains, New York 1970 and worked as Inservice Education Instructor and Supervisor in White Plains Hospital. While working on this job, she started attending Lehman College, one of the City University Colleges, where she gained the Bachelor of Science Degree cum laude and became a member of Sigma Theta Tau International the national nursing honor society because of her high grade point average . The degree course prepared her for being a Family Nurse Practitioner. work
In an effort to end living in snow bound areas, she moved to Altadena, California, December 1977 and worked with the Visiting Nurse Association in Glendale for three years as Clinical Supervisor. Doreen joined the staff of Los Angeles County + U.S.C. Medical Center Home Health Dept. as a Clinical Supervisor in 1981.
She obtained the Master of Science in Health Administration at California State University, Los Angeles 1987 and was promoted to Administrator and Director of Patient Care Services for the Home Health Agency. She held that position for 14 years. During this time she was active in the Home Health Council of Los Angeles where she served as Secretary, Vice President and President.
During the time she worked at L.A.C. + U.S.C. Medical Center, she also worked as an intermittent Home Health Accreditation Surveyor with the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. She surveyed Home Health Agencies in New York, New Jersey, Texas, Washington State, Utah, Oregon, Wyoming, Montana and California.
Doreen met her husband Loverture (Tony)Tulloch-Reid at the home of the Jamaican Consul, a mutual friend, in La Canada California. They were married in St. Andrew Parish Church, Jamaica 1991, nine months after meeting. They enjoyed 23 years of life together attending church regularly, travelling back to Jamaica annually and cruising to the Mexican Rivera, Aruba, the Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Hawaii and Alaska. Doreen and Tony enjoyed dancing and attending social gatherings.
After a nursing career of 53 years, she retired in 2003 and again responded to God’s call to start volunteering as a Faith Community Nurse at St. James United Methodist Church in Pasadena in 2005. She initiated the program with supervision from the Methodist Hospital in Arcadia. This program was very successful in providing early detection of disease and referring for physician intervention. It focused not only on body and mind but also spirit and provided health education by Specialists.
Doreen volunteered for The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program, ( HICAP) the State Health Insurance Program from 2006 to 2014 counseling Medicare beneficiaries in the Pasadena and Duarte Senior Centers in California. In Florida she continued to volunteer for the State Health Insurance Program which is known as SHINE.
God blessed her with a lovely voice and singing was her hobby. She sang on the choir of the St. James United Methodist Church in Pasadena for 30 years and also sang with the Westminister Gardens Chorale for five years. She enjoyed dancing, reading, floral arranging, travelling, cooking and baking. Doreen firmly believed in the benefits of physical exercise which she practiced daily for several years.
While volunteering for her church and HICAP, Doreen served the Duarte Woman’s Club a philanthropic organization, as Health Chairman, Treasurer, lst V.P. and President and received the honorable Woman of the Year recognition. She was also Chairman for Community Services, and International Outreach for the San Gabriel Valley District Board of the 26 Woman’s Clubs in that area. Lastly, Doreen volunteered as a member of the Education Committee of the Jamaica American Association of California 2013 – 2014 assisting with fundraising for scholarships to indigent children in Jamaica and to provide training in information technology for them.
In June 2014 Doreen and Tony relocated from California to Florida to be closer to family in Florida, New York, Connecticut and Jamaica. Sadly, Tony demised on Valentine’s Day of 2015.
In Florida she joined the Plantation United Methodist Church (PUMC) where she volunteered for the Interfaith, Multicultural Committee and as a Greeter. She was a firm believer in God and always tried to increase her faith and strengthen her spirit. To accomplish this, she joined the, Rev. Ron Burgess Co-ed Sunday School Class, the S.A.L.T. (Studying And Learning Together) class and the LOGOS Fellowship at PUMC and the International Bible Study Fellowship.
She will be sadly missed by her sister, Beverley Chin See, brother John Young, nieces: Janice Whittle, Stacy Fraser, Collette Jarrett, Deidre Guiseppi, Patricia Lodge, Lowell Young, Jacqueline Young-Jones, nephews: Leighton Chin See, Troy Chin See, Rufus Young, Linton Young, Devon Young and grand -nephews Ian Chin See and Tavio Jarrett.
