Clifford Alan Sandlin Sr., 85, completed his final journey on April 17th, passing away peacefully after battling Parkinson's disease . Born in Peoria, Illinois, to a large family, Cliff’s life was one of service, adventure, integrity, and deep love for his family.
Cliff proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, an experience that broadened his horizons and instilled a sense of duty he carried throughout his life. He then embarked on a long and distinguished career as an Air Traffic Controller. Known for his exceptional focus and calm demeanor under pressure, he ensured the safety of countless flights. His career took him and his family to diverse locations, including Chicago, the remote Pacific outpost of Wake Island, the Caribbean hub of Saint Thomas, West Palm Beach and finally 9 years at the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, from where he retired to Stuart FL in 1998.
Cliff believed deeply in keeping his word, a commitment evident during the challenging 1981 PATCO strike, where he chose to honor the oath he had taken as a federal employee and continued his duties, a decision rooted in his profound sense of integrity.
Cliff’s life was enriched by his love for adventure and exploration. Together with Karen, his wife of 62 years and the love of his life, he lived all over the world, embracing new cultures and experiences. He had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying fishing and diving, golfing, and savored the simple pleasures of good food and travel.
A devoted family man. he was a profoundly caring father to his sons, Dan Sandlin and Cliff Sandlin Jr, offering guidance and unwavering support. He cherished his grandchildren, Emma, Jack, and Sam, delighting in spending time with them and creating memories they will treasure forever. Known by all as someone you could always count on, his dependability was a cornerstone of his character.
In recent years, Cliff faced Parkinson's disease with courage and dignity. Determined to contribute to finding a cure, he participated in several research programs. Even in his final months, despite facing immense pain, he never complained, maintaining his deeply caring and positive spirit. His resilience and grace were an inspiration to all who knew him. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice, and Visiting Angels, his wonderful caregivers, who provided compassionate support and deeply cared for him.
Cliff is survived by his loving wife, Karen Jo Sandlin; his sons, Dan Sandlin (Kathy) and Cliff Sandlin Jr.;(Stacy) and his grandchildren Emma, Jack, and Sam Sandlin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and William Sandlin, his sister Carol, and his brothers Doug, Bill, and Bob. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will miss his presence greatly.
He will be interred on Saturday, May 24, at 9:30 AM at the south Florida National Cemetery, 6501 S State Road 7, Lake Worth, F33449.
