Born Celia Bess Beukelman in Camden, Maine, on August 3, 1944, she was welcomed into the world by her parents, Rev. Henry and Ruth Beukelman, and her two sisters, Bonnie and Leanne.
It was evident from an early age that Liz loved to travel and explore new places.
In 1985 she married the love of her life, Robert (“Bob”) Garvin, and they welcomed family and friends to their Eaton, England apartment, with its spectacular view of Windsor Castle. When Bob’s health began to fail, they returned to their Fort Lauderdale home, where Liz was Bob’s loving caretaker in his final months.
Liz continued her love of travel by becoming, by her account, the oldest rookie flight attendant (with a charter airline that included a month-long tour of Africa) and then working for Holland America at Port Everglades, which became a springboard for years of cruising.
Always wanting to improve her community, Liz was a pioneer programmer in the early days of computing for Broward County, worked on the campaign to elect Mayor Jim Naugle, volunteered with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and was an active member of the Atlantic Towers cooperative, where she lived for decades.
Liz never forgot her New England roots or her family. She was an enthusiastic and fun aunt for her four great nieces.
In addition to Bob and her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Leanne Smith.
She is survived by her sister Bonnie Wynne, niece Janet Owen, nephews Ted and Roger Wynne and Christopher and Jeffrey Smith, and great nieces Amey Bruno, Leigh Halloran, Katherine Barrett, and Via Wynne.
Her family deeply thanks Phyllis Keeth for her friendship, companionship, and stalwart caregiving, especially during Liz’s final months.
Liz will be interred with Bob in Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Lauderdale. A memorial will be scheduled at a later date.
