Carol Jean Nichols was an inspiring and outspoken mother, wife, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left this world far too quickly to be with the Lord at 88 years, 8 months young on May 2, 2021 in Plantation, Florida.
Carol was born to Lewis and Ruth Helms on September 9, 1932, and while in high school moved from Takoma Park, Maryland, with her family to the Miami Dade County area, where she graduated from Ponce De Leon High School in Coral Gables. She met her future husband, Lyle, in History class after he asked her to get a Coke with him after school one day. When she declined and a girl nearby showed interest, Carol quickly interjected “On second thought, I will go get that Coke.!"
Following high school, she married Lyle in 1950 and soon graduated from the LPN nursing program at Lindsey Hopkins Vocational College, working at Mercy Hospital and then Baptist Hospital in Miami. She is survived by her son Lyle (Sonia), brother Terry (Bette), grandchildren (Lissandra, Erica), and great-grandchildren (Ameray, Aidan). Carol was a selfless church and community-centered servant who filled many key roles and wore many hats. She was always spirited, loved by everyone, and in her elder years was known as “the most positive person in the world.” Her passions included reading, doing crossword puzzles, teaching Sunday School, leading church bible studies, and praying for others.
Her mentor in life was Jesus Christ. Carol was impacted by the sacrifice that Christ made for the world, and by the charitable life led by her mother-in-law, and thus made it her goal to help others and make them smile while sharing the word of God. She strove daily to stay as close to Him as possible, and was truly looking forward to meeting Him.
Carol was one of a kind. She will be greatly missed, as she was truly the salt of the earth, serving as a beacon of light to many souls, with a quick wit and great sense of humor. Thank you, Carol, for the countless personal sacrifices that you made for others; we know that you are at heavenly peace now, in the presence of the Lord, Lyle, and Debra.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on June 11, 2021 at 11 AM ET as broadcast via live Webstream, which can be viewed on the internet using the following link: www.calvaryftl.org/memorial
