Bertha Mc Ateer (Bert), longtime resident of Hollywood Florida, returned to the Lord on Friday, January 19, 2018. She was born to Louis Van Duyne and Mary Meyers on March 26, 1939 in Morris Plains, NJ. Bert graduated from St. Mary’s Grammar and High Schools in Paterson, NJ and graduated in 1957. Shortly after graduation and her engagement, Bert married James J. Mc Ateer, Sr. of Paterson, NJ. on July 6, 1957. Bert and James celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in July 2017!
Bert fought her long battle with colon cancer with extreme courage since she was first diagnosed in August of 2009. Her quiet strength, stubbornness (the ‘Stubborn Dutchman’), humbleness, generosity, compassion, sense of humor, commitment, and love of friends and family supported her on the battlefield where she valiantly fought these past 8.5 years. Her determination to fight this ‘beast’ never waivered and throughout she always found a way to bring joy and laughter to all she touched.
Bert had a varied and successful professional life working in such capacities as an accountant (California), a manager of a restaurant (New Jersey), a customer service representative for a thermoplastics company (Pennsylvania), and finishing her career as a customer service manager for Jodee Inc. (Florida) serving mastectomy patients and various retail company suppliers.
Bert is survived by her husband, (James Joseph, Sr.), son (James Joseph, Jr.), daughter (Dawn), daughter-in-law (Mary Jo Eyler), granddaughter (Deirdre Mc Ateer Gee), and beloved dog (Chloe).
Bert requested there be no viewing or open service. In lieu of sending flowers the family requests that donations, if you so choose, please be made to Stand Up To Cancer or the American Cancer Society.
