It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Alan "Rick" McCraw, age 74, of Commerce, Texas. Born on April 19, 1952, in Denison, Texas, Rick spent much of his life in the community he called home, building lasting friendships and touching countless lives through his work, his music, and his compassionate heart.
Rick attended East Texas A&M University, where he studied psychology, counseling, and creative writing and later taught psychology and writing, sharing his knowledge and passion for helping others understand themselves. He dedicated his professional life to serving others as a counselor and owner of Balance For Life in Commerce, Texas. Through his counseling practice, Rick offered guidance, hope, and encouragement to countless individuals and families, helping them navigate life's challenges with compassion and understanding.
Music was one of Rick's greatest passions. A gifted singer, songwriter, and musician, he became a familiar and beloved presence throughout North Texas, performing with several bands over the years, including Force Of Time, Flashback, and, more recently, as one half of the cherished duo Mitch n' Stick. Whether performing on stage or sitting in with friends, Rick’s music brought people together and created memories that will endure for years to come.
Above all else, Rick treasured the people he loved. He is survived by the love of his life, Kathleen Boothman-Robnett, whose unwavering love and companionship brought him immeasurable joy. Together they shared a bond that was evident to everyone who knew them. He is also survived by his three sons, Chris McCraw (Angela), Shawn McCraw, and Joey McCraw (Crystal); his stepdaughter, Victoria Beller (James Burg); and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rick was known for his kindness, wisdom, quick smile, and his ability to make people feel seen and valued. He had a quick wit, an easy laugh, and a remarkable ability to put people at ease. He believed deeply in the power of growth, healing, and second chances. His favorite saying, one he often shared with others, was, "It's never too late to become the person you could have been." Those words reflected not only what he believed, but the way he lived and encouraged others to live.
Rick's legacy will live on through the lives he touched—as a father, partner, counselor, teacher, musician, and friend. His compassion, generosity, and music will continue to echo in the hearts of his family, friends, former students, clients, fellow musicians, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.
His greatest talent wasn’t found in his music, counseling, or creative writing—it was making people feel like they mattered. Rick never met a stranger. Whether over coffee, on stage, or in his counseling practice, he had a gift for making people feel heard.
Though his voice has fallen silent, the songs he sang, the wisdom he shared, and the love he gave will never be forgotten.
In lieu of a traditional funeral, Rick often said he wanted nothing more than for his family, friends, and fellow musicians to gather with good food, live music, and stories. In keeping with his wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Calhoun’s 2.0 in Denison, Texas.
Friends and family are invited to come share stories, laughter, food, and music as we celebrate Rick’s remarkable life.
