Michael John McAloon, 75, passed away in his home in Plano, Texas on April 1, 2023 surrounded by the love and devotion of his family and friends. Mike was born on June 6, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts to Ralph and Rita McAloon. He was raised in Hartford, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts. After graduating high school, Mike enlisted in the United States Air Force. While stationed nearby, Mike met the love of his life, Marjorie, while roller skating at the Hiawatha Roller Rink in Pipestone, Minnesota. Mike would often say they have been going around in circles together every since.
After serving his country for 13 years, Mike joined the civilian work force near Denver, Colorado. He was soon transferred to Texas where the family has made their home for the last 43 years. Mike worked in the telecommunications and computer services area for eight years before following his true calling, becoming a school teacher. Mike taught high school for Wylie Independent School District for 23 years. Mike loved being a teacher and would often say, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Mike enjoyed many things in life from watercolor painting to playing musical instruments including guitar, mountain dulcimer, mandolin, ukulele, Bodhrán and penny whistle. But the highlight of any day for Mike was time spent with family even if it was as simple as sitting on a rock by the river and watching his sons fly fishing.
After retiring from teaching and going on his first mission trip, Mike’s passion became mission work. He made several trips to Juarez, Mexico with the Suncreek United Methodist Church teams to build cinderblock homes for families living in cardboard and pallet shelters. He also made several trips to Czechia to develop relationships with people there to be an example of Christian love for them and to tell them about the love of Jesus. At the time of his death, Mike was the chairman of the Suncreek United Methodist Church mission committee.
Mike is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie, his children, Michael,Jr. (Ethelind) and Sean (Anita) of McKinney, Texas, and Devin of Lavon, Texas, his nine grandchildren, Jackson, Sydney, Brant, Gerrit, Grace, Talyn, Michael III, Ian, and Owen, his brother, Kurt of Flagstaff, Arizona, and his nephews, Jason and Jesse D’Amato near Oklahoma City. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Regina D’Amato, and his granddaughter, Amily Grace.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made through Suncreek United Methodist Church to the Juarez Scholarship Fund because Mike believed education to be essential in overcoming poverty.
A Service of Remembrance of Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2:00pm at Suncreek United Methodist Church, 1517 West McDermott Drive, Allen, Texas.
