Marilyn T. Shockney, 80, died in her apartment in the Tradition Prestonwood Independent Living Facility in Dallas, TX, with her loving husband Joseph and daughter Mary by her side on Monday, January 21st due to complications from end stage renal disease. We are thankful that she died peacefully and in her sleep.
Marilyn was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Louis E. Tadsen and Margaret N. Tadsen. She has two sisters, her fraternal twin Ursuline Sr. Rose Tadsen (Margaret Tadsen) who died on February 1, 2017 and her younger sister Ursuline Sr. Mary Lou Tadsen (Mary Lou Tadsen).
Marilyn attended the Ursuline Academy of the Sacred Heart in East Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated in 1956. After beginning college in Cleveland, Ohio, and after the family moved to Richardson, Texas in 1979, Marilyn completed her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1989, graduating cum laude.
Marilyn married Joseph C. Shockney on October 29, 1960 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Garfield Heights, Ohio. Their marriage lasted an amazing 58 years. Marilyn and Joseph have 3 children: Mary Shockney Castorina, born in 1962, Michael Allen Shockney, born in 1964, and William Joseph Shockney, born in 1966.
Marilyn worked at the Jones Day law firm in Cleveland, Ohio from 1958 to 1962 and also worked at IBM in Dallas, Texas and later in San Antonio, Texas from 1983 to 1990. In retirement she devoted considerable time to volunteering at the Catholic Worker House in San Antonio, Texas and also volunteered and served on the Board of Directors at the San Antonio Ronald McDonald House for 22 years.
Marilyn was dedicated to her family and loved to cook. She was a superb pie baker and passed on her award winning skills to her son Michael and daughter Mary, who enjoy carrying on her pie-baking legacy. Marilyn and Joe loved to travel and were fortunate to travel around the world from 1992 through 2008 – visiting all continents except for Antarctica. She also enjoyed numerous social activities and playing bridge at Sonterra Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her twin-sister Sr. Rose Tadsen (OSU).
Marilyn is survived by her husband Joe, her sister Sr. Mary Lou Tadsen (OSU), her daughter Mary Shockney Castorina and husband John Louis Castorina, her grandsons Donavan and Nicholas Castorina, her son Michael Allen Shockney and wife Shelly Wilbanks, her son William Joseph Shockney and wife Tracy Kartye, her granddaughter Nina Lou Shockney and grandson Benjamin Lincoln Shockney, her sister-in-law Sue Shockney and nephews Steven and Douglas Shockney.
A memorial mass is scheduled at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 28, 2019 at All Saints Catholic Church, 5231 Meadowcreek Drive, Dallas, TX 75248.
