Kirk was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, and is now resting at peace with his Heavenly Father. He was a loyal, loving husband and a dedicated father and grandfather. His sense of humor and jovial nature were his way of bringing joy, laughter and happiness to others, while also offering wisdom and spiritual guidance. Kirk was an avid reader; he loved studying the Bible, but also enjoyed books of numerous other genres. He was a history buff who enjoyed visiting museums, traveling, and appreciating nature. During his life he had the privilege of living in and being with friends and family in numerous Missouri towns and cities, Virginia, Tennessee, and Texas. Although Kirk was an only child, when he married into the Atwood family he embraced his extended family through Mary Beth and relished his role as son, brother, and uncle to her family members.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Beth (Atwood) Sumpter, his son Kirk Anthony Sumpter, and four grandchildren: Joshua Anthony Sumpter of Tucson, Arizona, Jeremy Daniel Sumpter (Kara) of Tucson, Arizona, Alexia Joy Sumpter of Knob Knoster, Missouri, and Jenna Rachelle Sumpter of Longview, Texas. He rejoiced at the birth of twin great-granddaughters to Jeremy and Kara in 2025: Evelyn and Cecilia.
No public services will be held. If you wish to make a donation in Kirk's memory, please consider donating to one of the ministries he was a strong supporter of:
