John Herman Evers III

October 11, 1931 – November 30, 2024
Obituary of John Herman Evers III

John H. (Hank) Evers was born October 11, 1931, at Letterman General Hospital at the Military Post of The Presidio, San Francisco, and died on November 30, 2024 at the age of 93, leaving his beloved college sweetheart and wife of 69 years of marriage, Marlyn Sue (Butler) Evers, two children, Pamela Sue Evers and John Howard Evers, daughter-in-law Cindy Evers, grandsons John Franklin Evers and Joshua James Evers, sisters Barbara Faubion and Tina Fraser, brother-in-law Paul Fraser, and many loved relatives. Hank was preceded in death by his parents, Major John and Margaret Evers, buried beside each other at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

John “Hank” Evers was a military brat schooled in Texas, California, Washington, Kansas, the Philippines, and Austria, and graduated from the University of Kansas (Mathematics) and the University of Missouri (MBA in Finance). He was an Eagle Scout and a Distinguished Military Graduate, serving as a Regular Army Officer with the 10th Infantry Division in Kansas and in Germany. He also served two tours in the Kansas National Guard, first during his college years, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant, and again following his active-duty tour, serving as a Captain and Company Commander. He qualified as Expert on most Infantry weapons and was rated a “Superior” Weapons Instructor. Hank was a Korean War-era veteran and member of the American Legion.

Hank was an Industrial Engineer and Manager with Proctor & Gamble, Montgomery Wards, and Hunt Foods, and retired after a career in Management Consulting as a Partner at Ernst & Young. After retirement from Ernst & Young, he purchased an existing city franchise for the Dairy Queen restaurants in Corpus Christi, TX, where he introduced Texas Blue Bell Ice Cream to the menu alongside Dairy Queen’s soft serve and yogurt desserts.

While at Proctor & Gamble and Montgomery Wards, Hank taught Industrial Engineering at Rockhurst College, as well as served as a Boy Scout Leader at Lake Quivira, Kansas. He was a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International, a Certified Management Consultant, an Officer in the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC), member of the Association of Systems Management (ASM), and a senior member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers (AIIE). He was a contributing author to several business textbooks and wrote numerous magazine articles and training manuals.

In his later years, Hank volunteered with many service and charitable agencies and organizations in his communities. He became the first male President of The Heritage Guild and Chestnut Square in McKinney, TX and was instrumental in developing the Chapel Garden and Bobby’s Room in the Johnson House dedicated to Bobby Younger, a McKinney World War II hero whose plane was shot down in 1942.

Hank loved his wife, his family, his Military community, his State of Texas, and his Nation. He enjoyed his work, his volunteer service, his trees and flowers, and his cowboy boots! He will be dearly missed.
