Glenda Joyce Grozier, age 74, of Plano, Texas, passed away on Feb. 28, 2023 after a long struggle with kidney failure. Glenda was born on Nov. 6, 1948, to Bill Grozier (1921-67) and Betty Jo Collins Grozier (1928-94) in Cisco, Texas. She grew up in San Angelo and went to the University of Texas-Austin in 1967 as the first person in her family to go to college. Glenda graduated with a BA in linguistics in 1971, after which she taught English to foreign military officers for the Defense Language Institute at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She obtained a MA in foreign language education from the University of Texas-Austin in 1980.
When the DLI called for volunteers to teach in Egypt, she set off on a new adventure, moving to Cairo in 1980. It was there that she met Nabil Attia, an Egyptian army general, whom she married on May 24, 1983 in San Antonio. They had one daughter, Layla, born in Giza, Egypt. In 1987, they moved to Doha, Qatar, then to San Angelo, where Glenda obtained a BA in accounting from Angelo State University in 1991. She moved to Plano, Texas later that year, then spent 1992-94 in Doha before returning to Plano, where she worked as a certified public accountant. She launched her own business in 2001, helping local small businesses with their bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, and taxes.
Complications of diabetes led her to retire by 2015, after which she focused on her hobbies. Her interests and talents were diverse. An early adopter of technology, she wrote her own computer games in the early 1990s to help her daughter learn math. She enjoyed learning about other cultures and languages and studied Russian, Hindi, and Arabic. Crafts were one of her skills; her creations included beautiful quilts, crocheted blankets, and knitted scarves. She also liked relaxing with British TV shows such as Midsomer Murders and Doc Martin. And she enjoyed gardening, especially planting pollinator-friendly native plants that helped sustain the local butterfly population. Her love, kindness, and generosity will remain forever in our hearts.
