Charles Roald (Chuck) Moore, 73, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, died at home in Dallas on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, from complications from myelodysplastic syndrome. He is survived by his wife Margaret, and sons Stephen (Wendy) of Dallas and David (Ceci) of Seattle, Washington; grandson Thomas also of Seattle; sister Kathy Farmer (Gef) of Carrollton, Texas; brother Tom (Terry) of Pembroke Park, Florida; his aunt Nell Perry of Eldorado, Illinois; his sister-in-law Dianna Woods (Michael) of Mount Vernon, Texas; nephews and nieces, cousins and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents Roald Amundsen (Rollie) and Ethel Moore and his brother David.
Chuck was born on August 15, 1946, in Harrisburg, Illinois. He was a graduate of Harrisburg Township High School, Illinois Wesleyan University and Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. In June 1973 he was ordained and installed as Associate Pastor at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Dallas, where he directed the music and Christian education programs. He served at Trinity until 1993 and from 1995-2005 was Director of Music at Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church. In March 1995, he was named Executive Director of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestras (GDYO), a position he held until his retirement in May 2016. During his leadership the GDYO doubled the number of performing ensembles, adding the Wind Symphony, Sinfonietta, Flute Choir and the Jazz Institute. He led the GDYO on tours of France, England, Scotland, Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic and the Wind Symphony on a China tour. In his 20 years of leadership, the total student enrollment in GDYO programs grew from 290 to 480, with over 800 students auditioning annually. He was loved and respected by GDYO students and their parents.
Following his retirement, Chuck enjoyed biking, bird watching, hiking, chamber music and symphony concerts, poetry and traveling to his favorite places, Mo-Ranch, a Presbyterian retreat center in the Texas hill country and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. He was proud to be a docent at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Chuck’s life will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 4pm at the First Unitarian Church of Dallas, 4015 Normandy Avenue. The service will also be live-streamed on the church’s website: www.dallasuu.org/live
