John David Pine, 92, passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2025 with his loving wife and family by his side. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Navy veteran, and retired industrial engineer, Dave lived a full and meaningful life.
Born in 1932 in Dayton, Ohio, Dave graduated from Fairview High School, where he met his childhood sweetheart and future wife, Mary. Dave was a standout student and basketball player at Fairview and went on to Penn State University, earning his engineering degree while participating in the ROTC program. After college, he served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant during the Korean War, including service on the USS Snowden. After his military service, Dave worked as a civilian engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, dedicating his career to innovation and logistics, retiring at the age of 65.
Dave and his wife of 70 years, Mary, were inseparable. Their love story was one of adventure, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they shared a passion for family and friends, travel adventures, tennis groups, and exploring nature, especially bird watching. They were also devoted to their Lutheran churches in Dayton (Trinity Lutheran) and Bainbridge, Ohio (Lord of Life Lutheran), and participated in several mission trips to Biloxi, Mississippi, through Habitat for Humanity.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. Pine and Eleanor Folsom, his sisters Patty and Rosemary, and his brother Bob.
Dave is survived by his wife, Mary; his children Carolyn Pine McNaughton, Marci Pine Laubacher (Tom), and Steven Pine (Andrea); his grandchildren Jackie Gilbert (Jared), Samantha Toscano (Michael), Jack Laubacher, Will Laubacher, Sean Pine (Megan), and Henry Pine; his great-grandchildren Leland, Ren, and Donovan; and extended family, including nieces and nephews; plus his ever faithful dog, Bella.
The family would like to thank the staff at Independence Village in Aurora, CorsoCare Hospice, and his caregiver, Tiara Robinson-Hill, for all the care and compassion they showed Dave in his final years.
Dave will be remembered for his kindness, intelligence, and unique, wry sense of humor. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and integrity that will be cherished by his friends and family forever.
A private memorial service to honor Dave’s life will be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Bainbridge, Ohio (Auburn Township), on April 4. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
