Helmut "Hal" Lammel

Helmut “Hal” Lammel, 79, of North Ridgeville, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his sleep during the early morning hours of June 27, 2026, at Reserve Care Ames Family Hospice in Westlake, Ohio. The compassionate staff provided exceptional care and comfort to both Hal and his family during his final days.

Hal is survived by his beloved wife, Gail; daughter, Pam; and son, Joe. He also shared a special bond with his beloved grand cat, Briggs, affectionately known as "Mr. Briggs", who spent the last two years living with Hal and Gail at what they lovingly referred to as "Shady Pines Retirement Home." The two were faithful companions, sharing countless afternoon naps and quiet moments together on the patio, soaking up the sunshine and watching the birds. Briggs brought Hal endless comfort and companionship and, in return, was deeply loved. He, too, will dearly miss his cherished friend.

Hal also leaves behind many extended family members, dear friends, and brothers and sisters in the faith who will miss him greatly.

Born on April 3, 1947, in Austria, Hal immigrated to the United States with his family as a young boy in search of a better life. Their journey to America remained one of the defining stories of his life, and years later he lovingly documented it in his book, I Once Dreamt of Coming to America, preserving his family's history and expressing the deep gratitude he felt for the opportunities they found in their new home.

Hal cherished his years at West Technical High School, where he formed lifelong friendships. He often spoke fondly of his time there and enthusiastically attended class reunions well into his seventies, always enjoying the opportunity to reconnect with classmates and reminisce about those formative years.

After graduating, Hal answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps where he served honorably during the Vietnam War, earning the title of corporal and receiving seven medals. Although he rarely spoke about his experiences, he eventually chose to share that important chapter of his life through his book, Mai Xa Chan, offering a thoughtful and personal reflection on his time in Vietnam.

Upon returning home, Hal built a long and respected career as an electric lineman with The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company. He took great pride in his work, knowing that restoring power meant helping families and communities during their times of greatest need. Throughout the years, he enjoyed sharing stories from the job, many of which he later captured in his book, The Story Teller.

Perhaps the greatest guiding force in Hal's life was his deep faith in God. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, he devoted himself to serving Jehovah and was blessed with many treasured friendships within the congregation. His faith also took him abroad, including to Bogotá, Colombia, where he volunteered on construction projects supporting facilities used to print Bible-based literature. Those meaningful experiences later became the inspiration for another of his books, Serving Jehovah in Colombia.

Later in life, Hal discovered a passion for writing. Through the books and short stories, he published on Amazon, he preserved the memories, experiences, and life lessons that meant so much to him. His writings became a lasting gift to his family and friends, ensuring that future generations would know the stories, values, and moments that shaped his life.

Above all else, Hal was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a dedicated family man. He treasured every moment spent with those he loved. He found joy in gardening, writing, and sharing the experiences that had shaped his life. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and quiet compassion. Whether someone needed a helping hand, practical advice, or simply a listening ear, Hal was always there without hesitation. His warmth, humility, and genuine concern for others left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Hal will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all whose lives he touched. His legacy lives on through the stories he wrote, the family he cherished, the faith he lived by, and the countless acts of kindness he showed throughout his life.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the physician, nurses, aides, and staff at Reserve Care Ames Family Hospice for the exceptional care, compassion, and dignity they provided to Hal and his loved ones.

Family and friends are warmly invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, August 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, located at 24000 Royalton Road, Columbia Station, OH 44028.

For those who are unable to attend in person, the service will also be available via Zoom. Details for accessing the Zoom meeting will be provided at a later date.
