Robert "Bob" Peter Straut

Robert Peter Straut (Bob), age 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at his home in New Providence, NJ, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Bob was a man of quiet strength and unshakable integrity - the kind of man who lived his values rather than talked about them.

Born in Jersey City, Bob grew up in Hudson County before making his home in Westwood, NJ, where he and his wife, Alice, raised their three children. Bob and Alice met in high school, beginning a partnership that would last sixty-six years. Later, Bob and Alice enjoyed many happy years down the shore in Wall Township and Farmingdale before relocating to Westfield to be closer to family. They most recently made their home in New Providence.

Bob graduated from St. Michael's High School in 1956 and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business from the University of Rhode Island in 1961. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for thirty-seven years. Commissioned through Army ROTC, he served on active duty before continuing his military career in the Army Reserve (78th Training Division), retiring with the rank of Colonel. His pride in that service never faded and went hand in hand with a deep patriotic spirit. Following his military retirement, Bob continued his service to his country and community as a volunteer admissions recruiter for the United States Military Academy at West Point.

A dedicated educator and mentor, Bob taught history and coached football at Don Bosco Prep and Waldwick High Schools, leaving a lasting impression on generations of students and players who remember him as much for his character as for the content he taught.

He was predeceased by his parents, his siblings, and many dear relatives and friends. Bob is survived by his wife, Alice Callaghan Straut; his daughter Ellen Buckley (Chris) and their children Sean, Kevin, and Brianne; his son Steven Straut (Dina) and their son Dylan; and his daughter Lisa Giandana (Ted) and their children Rose and Teddy. Bob's pride in his children and grandchildren was unmistakable - it was evident in his voice and his smile every time he spoke of them.

Bob cherished the ocean, jazz music, classic movies, a good cigar, and the thrill of a horse race. He was known for raising a glass to offer a toast, sharing a joke, or inviting his loved ones to take a ride. A lifelong sports fan, he was especially devoted to Army Football. Bob loved history, travel, a healthy jog - but above all, he loved his family.

Bob will be remembered for his integrity, his quiet strength, his devotion to his country, and his abiding love for Alice and their family. Colonel, Coach, Uncle Bob, Grandpa, Pops, Dad, and My Partner - you will be deeply missed.

A Memorial Mass will be held at the Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River, NJ on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at 11:15 am.
