She was born on January 11, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of the late Norman and Malinda (Matthews) Marshall and educated in Philadelphia, PA. She continued her education with post graduate studies. Her last professional employment was with Curtis Publication Company, Philadelphia. Her marriage to George W. Sullivan, took place in 1943; a blessed union of 59 years, until Mr. Sullivan’s passing in 2002.
Mrs. Sullivan enjoyed line dancing, rap and tap-dancing and traveling. In fact she traveled to Bermuda, Spain, Rome, Paris and London, along with Canada. Mattie performed in plays in her earlier years. “Little Flower” participated in multi-cultural affairs as the beloved woman of the Southeastern Cherokee Confederacy of PA. She was a Sunday school teacher at the Methodist church and directress of the Trinity Orchestra which traveled to various churches in the Delaware Valley in her younger years.
Survivors include her three children, George Sullivan, Jr. of Philadelphia, Jacqueline Clark and husband Dr. William Clark of Sicklerville, NJ and Charmaine Sullivan-Larke and husband Albert of Charlotte, NC; ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Ellis.
Services are private as Mattie celebrated her 100th birthday last year in the companionship of her family and friends. The family want to hold on to these good memories. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Neptune Cremation Society, Paramus, NJ-201-909-9845.
