
"Chip" John Prentice Cutler of Montville, New Jersey passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026 after a long and courageous battle with effects of Agent Orange and multiple cancers, He was born August 23, 1942 in Worcester, Massachusetts to Rosalie Winchell and John Roswell Cutler. He graduated North High School, Worcester in 1961 and then attended University of Massachusetts Stockbridge School of Agriculture graduating in 1963 with an Associate Degree in Horticulture.
Chip joined the United States Navy in 1964. He attained the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class with the Navy Mobile Construction Battalion (MCB11) - the Seabees. He completed two tours in Vietnam in 1966 and 1968, spending nearly three years overseas. During his second tour he was stationed near DaNang where the Seabees played a vital role in building and maintaining critical infrastructure under combat conditions.
After serving with the Navy Chip took a position with John Deere Co. as a Territory Manager in New Jersey where he met his wife, Barbara Lee Van Riper of Montville. In 1973 he was transferred by John Deere to Syracuse, New York as a Financial Manager. In 1978 he took a position as Sales Manager with Steven Willand, Inc. Distribution returning to New Jersey.
Chip loved being outdoors and enjoyed gardening, especially installing his famous drip irrigation systems, he also loved travel, boating, fishing, skiing and golf. He was an active member at the Montville FW Post 5481 and was proud to be part of the Color Guard and served as a Post Trustee.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara Van Riper Cutler, a son, Jon Bradley Cutler and his wife Samantha Coch Cutler of Port Monmouth, NJ, and three adored grandchildren Stella James Cutler, Jack Prentice Cutler and Callie Rose Cutler.
He is also survived by two sisters Judith E. Webster, husband John and Bonnie Davis, husband John M.; a nephew Owen Davis and nieces Emily Davis Justin (Matt Justin) and Sarah Johnston. Two grand nieces Emma and Porter Johnston.
He was adored by several cousins who lovingly called him "Uncle Chip".
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 1 PM at the Montville Reformed Church, 9 Church Lane, Montville, No.
