Robert L. Yelton, a proud veteran, devoted family man, and lifelong entertainer, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2025 at the age of 82. Born on 20 Feb, 1943 in Covington, Kentucky, Robert dedicated his life to service, both in uniform and in the hearts of those who knew him.
A decorated soldier, Robert served his country with honor for 27 years, retiring as First Sergeant after earning some of the military’s highest commendations, including the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. His service took him across the globe, including two tours in Vietnam and two in Germany, culminating in his proudest achievement—serving as 1SG of the 8th Army HQ, Fort Gillem GA. Even in retirement, his military precision never wavered—except when it came to non-military schedules, where he was famously never on time.
In 1965, Robert married the love of his life, Patricia A. Yelton (née Rommes), and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and music until her passing in 2006. He is survived by his children, Mark Edward Yelton (Gainesville, GA) and Kathleen Anne Newell (Valrico, FL); and his beloved grandchildren, Holly A Newell (Valrico, FL), Andrew W Newell (Deerfield Beach, FL), and Kaitlin M. Yelton (Savannah, GA).
Robert had a voice that could fill a room, a laugh that could lift a spirit, and a presence that could make any moment brighter. He was a longtime member of the Big Chicken Chorus in Kennesaw, GA and the quartet Indecision, always ready to share a song and a smile.
Whether strumming his guitar, cracking a joke, or indulging his passion for trains—big and small—he found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He also proudly served as a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, Mother Seton Council #6724, Brandon, FL.
He often said that every job took “20 minutes”, regardless of the actual time required—just one of many quirks that made him unforgettable. His legacy lives on in the love of his family, the camaraderie of his fellow Veterans, and the melodies that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, Robert would want you to salute the flag, thank a Veteran, or consider a donation to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or to your local animal shelter.
No formal services will be held.
