Bob attended Iowa State University on an ROTC scholarship majoring in aeronautical engineering. After serving 3 years as a naval officer, Bob was the Project Manager for the development of the Blackhawk helicopter in the Dept. of the Army. He retired after serving as a Project Manager for a top secret project of the military.
In 1968 he married Judy Ragan Bennett. They have been a devoted team for almost 53 years. They blended a family consisting of 4 children and ultimately 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Bob loved the ocean from his Navy days and dreamed of bluewater (ocean) sailing. He and Judy sailed to Europe and back in 1992 as a celebration of Columbus’ voyage of discovery. Then, in 1999, Bob captained his yacht, Hornblower, with Judy as First Mate around the world on an adventure called the Millennium Odyssey. Later, he sailed trawler Hornblower on the Great Loop around the eastern United States and Canada.
Bob was a man of integrity, always willing to help others and a great listener! He was a member of FBC’s Sonshine Class for over 28 years. In spite of dealing with metastasized prostate cancer, he was always positive about life. He was the unofficial “hugger” for FBC, and his warmth and upbeat spirit will be sorely missed.
