Dick was born in Rutland, Vt on April 28, 1936. He was predeceased by his parents Glenn E. and Doris C. (Berry) Newton. In October 1985, he married Mary Ann (Walker) Newton. Dick graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus, GA in 1954. He then served in the US Air Force from 1955 – 1975, retiring with the rank of Tech Sergeant. Upon retiring, he settled with his family in Holyoke, MA where he worked at a family business while attaining an Associate’s Degree in Engineering from Springfield Technical Community College. Dick then worked for Becton Dickenson, relocating to Abingdon, MD in 1993 and retiring as Manager of Field Service, Eastern US and Canada in 2007.
Dick is survived by his wife Mary Ann Newton, his children Suzanne Newton, Doris (Nelson) Carpentier, Donna (Dario Cavallero) Collins, and Mark (Sally) Newton. He is also survived by his grandchildren Katherine Maiolo (Jon Tracy), Gina (Mike) Dedeurwaerder, Michelle Maiolo (David Kunze), Allison Collins (Matthew McCollum), and Eric (Julia) Collins; and two great-grandchildren, Madison Maiolo and Vinnie Dedeurwaerder. He is also survived by his first wife, Jeannette Newton. He was pre-deceased by a younger brother, Paul Newton. He loved his golden retrievers Brandy, Libby, and Emma that he and Mary Ann rescued over the years. After retiring in Dade City, FL, he served as a Guardian Ad Litem and an Ombudsman. He was a past President and CEO of the Traveler’s Rest (TR) Board of Directors, and was proud of some of the changes made under his leadership.
Dick was a Christian and a past Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed singing in the church choir and in Barbershop choruses. Dick loved keeping up with new technology. He built a Heath Kit TV in the early 1970s, was one of the first people to have a home computer in the early 1980s, and had the first generation iPhone. Throughout his life, he kept a great sense of humor, even telling jokes to his compassionate hospice care givers in his final days.
The family would like to share their sincere appreciation to their friends Gary and Betsy Behler who have been so helpful to Mary Ann during Dick’s illness and time in the hospital.
His family is organizing a celebration of life for later this year. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either Pulmonary Hypertension Association (phassociation.org) or The Golden Retriever Rescue of Mid-Florida (grrmf.org).
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.neptunesociety.com/location/tampa-cremation for the Newton family.
