Mike Kroll, a beloved father, husband, coach, and friend, was born on April 15, 1953, in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Tampa, Florida. Mike’s life was defined by his passion for sports, his love for others, and his dedication to making the world a better place.
From a young age, Mike was an athlete of exceptional talent. He excelled in many sports at Nativity Catholic School, and continued to shine during his years at Tampa Catholic High School. As a standout quarterback and punter, Mike earned All-State honors, setting impressive records, including a 1000-yard passing season and a 70-yard punt against rival Jesuit High School in his senior year. In basketball, he joined the elite 1000-point club, further cementing his reputation as a versatile athlete. Mike’s athletic achievements were recognized in 2010 when he was inducted into Tampa Catholic High School’s inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame.
Though he received numerous football scholarship offers upon graduation in 1972, Mike’s love for baseball led him to pursue a career with the Baltimore Orioles, where he played as a catcher for several years. His commitment to athletics and the Tampa Bay community was unwavering, and his legacy as a coach and mentor continues to inspire countless young athletes.
His love for aviation led him to earn his pilot’s license in 1983, an accomplishment that he took great pride in. Mike’s passion for craftsmanship and creation extended beyond sports. As a skilled carpenter, he spent many years bringing beautiful projects to life. Known for his warm heart, Mike had a rare ability to light up any room with his smile and laughter. He was never a stranger to anyone and could make friends wherever he went. His genuine care for others, combined with his vibrant energy, made him the life of every gathering.
One of Mike’s greatest joys was his family. His love for his children and commitment to their growth and development were paramount throughout his life. In 2004, Mike married his soulmate, Nancy Kroll, who shared his passion for coaching. Together, they spent countless hours mentoring and coaching hundreds of young athletes, shaping the lives of many along the way. Sports became their shared language, and it was through coaching that their bond grew even stronger. Mike was immensely proud of his children, two of whom followed in his footsteps, earning basketball scholarships to college.
As an ordained officiant, Mike also had the honor of presiding over very dear friends’ weddings. His selflessness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his community left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Mike’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and an unshakeable commitment to others. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched.
