Lydia (Sanchez) Mones, was born in 1920, Tampa, Florida. She was married in Tampa, Florida, September 20, 1940, to Manuel Mones Sr.
With such a long lifetime, Lydia experienced many moments in history. The year she was born, so was the 19th amendment, the birth of mass media and prohibition.
She lived through the inauguration of 13 different presidents, 24 Olympic Games, 5 major wars and 2 major attacks on US soil. She lived through the Great Depression, the creation of the atom bomb, the civil rights movement, the space race, the Cold War, the war on drugs and the war on terror.
Included in her lifetime were the athletic feats of Jackie Robinson, Billy Jean King and Muhammad Ali. She witnessed the repeal of prohibition, Title IX, the legalization of gay marriage, women’s right to vote and passing of the Civil Rights Act. She witnessed medical feats such as the polio vaccine, chemotherapy and oral contraceptives, to name a few. She was a pioneer among those who would take vitamin supplements to maintain a healthy body.
She was around during major medical news like the AIDS epidemic, the development of DNA sequencing and the Coronavirus pandemic, which she survived at the age of 100.
Lydia was the daughter of Juan and Concha Sanchez who immigrated to the United States from Spain in the early 1900s. Her daughter, Arlene Guthrie and her younger sisters, Margaret Valenti and Dalia Gierach, preceded her passing.
Lydia is survived by her son, Manuel Mones Jr. (Yolanda), grandchildren, Monica Pilkey (Dave), Celeste Good (Mike), Paul Wells (McCullough), Melinda Stone (James), Karen Mones, Conrad Mones, her great grandchildren, Cal Pilkey, Chaz Pilkey, Jack Pilkey, Jordan Frasier, Trip McCuller, Jason Stone, Ava Stone and Hayden Stone.
At Ms. Mones' request, there will be no services.
