John Daniel Prater, age 71, left us peacefully on October 12, 2023. Born in July of 1952 to parents John and Betty Prater, Dan’s legacy is one of family, love, dedication, and adventure.
Raised in Dade City, Florida, Dan’s life and career took him through many specialties; first farming, later as an armed services member, then mechanic, and finally instrument technician. While proudly serving in the United States Air Force, he completed high school and gained the specialty of jet engine mechanics, sparking a love of aircraft while serving as a flying crew chief. After separating service with an honorable discharge in 1975, he carried these skills forward through a successful career, retiring as a mechanic from the City of Lakeland and then doing so again as an Instrument Technician for Ethos Energy.
Dan’s love for life and passion for adventure led to being an avid pilot who soared through the skies, enjoying a sense of freedom that mirrored his spirit. Captivated by the cosmos, he found solace and inspiration in the starry expanse above. When his attention wasn’t focused on the heavens he ventured below, scuba diving with the mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs, digging for and collecting fossils, and simply enjoying the sound of a breeze through pine trees. His love for the outdoors, animals, and natural wonders knew no bounds.
Dan’s devotion to his family was unwavering, as evidenced by its extensive reach. From his two former wives Laurie and Denise, Dan leaves behind three living children Corrie, Jason, and Joel (Amber), and was sadly preceded in death by a fourth child Catrina. Dan cherished his three grandchildren Faris, Emily, and Elizabeth, and loved his three siblings: Darlene (Mack), David, and Dwayne (Jackie). He further leaves a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews whom he held dear and whose lives were enriched by his presence.
Dan’s influence reached far beyond his immediate kin. He was a guiding presence to many who adopted him and called him “Dad “, a lifelong friend of far too many to list, and a positive influence to countless others who were fortunate to cross his path. His positive impact on those around him was immeasurable, a testament to his unwavering kindness and generosity.
In celebration of his remarkable life, a “Celebration of Life” event will take place at Withlacoochee State Park Pavilion #2 on November 25th, from 12 PM to 3 PM. In honor of John’s spirit and love for life, there will be food and refreshments provided for family and friends in attendance, your favorite dish in his honor is also welcome to share.
As we mourn his passing, we find solace in the knowledge that John’s legacy of love, adventure, and warm-hearted influence will endure. He may have embarked on his final journey, but his light will forever shine in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace, John Daniel Prater. You will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Dan will be interred at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell Florida with honor.
