I'm so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing.  Mrs. Luman was my 2nd grade teacher when I moved to Florida.  I came in as a struggling reader and she took me under her wing and had confidence in me.  I remember going under her desk and she gave me the opportunity to work ahead.  She has always remained one of my most favorite teachers and she truly made a difference for me.  I can only imagine the number of students she impacted in a similar way.  What a legacy!

My memories of Mom will always begin and end with laughter and love.  Please know she will always be in my heart and spirit with everything she gave and taught me.  Sending peace, especially to Frank, Carter and Jean-Louise.

Mrs. Luman was my teacher for first and second grade 20 years ago!! She always carried motherly energy, it’s so funny because as a child I would get embarrassed by accidentally calling her mom. As an adult I have a full appreciation as to why that happened- she loved and cared deeply for all of her students. I was part of the original butterfly garden team who helped build it with her, and I have some of my fondest memories as a kid in that garden. Mrs. Luman was a special woman and I have thought about her throughout my life! She has positively impacted thousands and thousands of kids (now adults) over the years, and I am forever grateful for those core childhood memories. My deepest condolences to her family, sending warmth and hugs. 

It is truly a testament to a life well-lived that she will live on in the hearts and memories of so many people whose lives she touched. Most people could live ten lives and not had so great an impact as she did.  She taught us so much more than life skills and academics; through her example we learned compassion, strength, humor, values, and wisdom.  She knew what mattered and it showed in everything she did and in everything she was.  Jean Louise & Carter, I hope there is some comfort for you and your families in hearing all the stories of how beloved she was.  We thank you for sharing her with us

My condolences to Jeanette’s family. She was a genuine teacher, mentor and inspiration to anyone that works with children. She could handle any situation with a smile. Jeanette had a heart of gold. A true angel. She is remembered with love. 

Jeanette was the first person I met when I started teaching at Seven Springs in 2003. It was my first teaching job and she was the best mentor! She game me a copper dish with a marble in it my first year. I’m not sure what it symbolized, but I still have it 20 years later displayed in my classroom. Every time I look at it I think of her! She was a person who put everyone else above herself and just had the BIGGEST heart. I am blessed to have crossed paths with her. I have no doubt she is dancing with the angels and they are having a great time because of her! 

Dear Jean Louise, Carter, and family, 
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mom, who served as a mom to so many.  I have such fond memories of my time at Cullowhee and your mom was such a big part of that time.  She was kind, funny, and compassionate.  She cared deeply for each of us campers.  She showed us it is OK to be different, being a fierce advocate for each of us and this special place where we could find a sense of belonging.  She, and your family in general, had a profound impact on my life.    Her ability to affect the lives of so many is a testament to her character and allows her legacy to live on in so many.  Thank you for sharing her with us!

Jeanette was a very special lady.  I learned so much from her both professionally and personally.  She had a heart of gold and has made a difference in so many ways.  I will never forget the way she took the idea of a butterfly garden and turned it into a reality at SSES.  So dedicated, fun, thoughtful and loving.  I will always remember how supportive she was to me.  I hope she is dancing with the angels.  

Thanks for being so kind to me as a newbie Media Spec at SSES. You made a huge difference in this world in so many lives. 

I had the pleasure of knowing “Mom” as we called her in TCE, spending summers there in ‘94, ‘95, ‘97 and ‘98. Incredible human being who cared for us while being away from home in Dominican Republic and made sure our summers there were wonderful. Sad to hear about her passing, I am sure she is being “Mom” in heaven. May her soul rest in peace.

I new Mom from TCE from '93 to '95. She was an exceptional person, witty and caring. She will be forever in my memories. May she rest in peace.

Dear Luman family,

My name is Jorge Ruiz from the Dominican Republic. I knew Mom, as you all know we called her, from 1994-1998; when I was 11-15 years old. 

It's been 25 years since I last saw Mom and this hit me hard. Mom was exceptional, loving, and supportive. She had an awesome laugh. She didn't let any misbehavior slide. She was always there.

In Summer of 97 I was stung by a bee. I had never been stung. I quickly began to swell up; without knowing why. I spent 2 nights in the WCU infirmary and had 2 midnight ambulance rides; over 1300 miles from my home and parents.

Mom spent every night at that Asheville ER with me; she'd arrive somehow, after my lonely ambulance ride, scared to death. I was only 14. Nevertheless, I think what I remember MOST was Mom laughing hysterically at the drunk man in the gurney next to us with uncontrollable hiccups.

Well, you knew her more & most - her laughter made it all better for me. 25 years later I teared up to hear Mom had passed away.

My heart goes out to you all.
Please know that Mom touched multiple hearts & souls; some even in those small island in the Caribbean.

What can I say about Jeanette? She was a true friend. We had a lot of fun teaching together at Anclote Elementary and Seven Springs Elementary. We would stand at our chalkboards when we were teaching and facing each other. There were no walls. We had a lot of fun and celebrated everything. We had Christmas trees, craft sales, thanksgiving feasts and many other happy times. Times. She even gave Dave and I an engagement party. A teacher even ran into the ditch in front of her house at the party. We had many fun days at the lake. She was a very special person. She would do anything for you. She will be greatly missed. I'm glad I have these memories. Rest in peace, Jeanette
